You’re Not Too Masculine, or Too Sensitive—You’re a Woman Who Remembers She Is Both Fire and Water
By Dr. Bev Walpole – Clinical Psychologist based in Guelph, Ontario, and Founder of Haven Wellness by Design
“You’re too masculine.”
“You’re too emotional.”
I sat with those words… and realized something:
Only in a disconnected world would a woman be criticized for embodying both power and feeling.
Because in truth—
That is her nature.
The Wound Beneath the Words
When a woman is told she is “too masculine,”
what she's really being told is:
Your fire is uncomfortable.
And when she is told she is “too emotional,”
what she's really being told is:
Your depth is inconvenient.
So she is left holding an impossible equation:
Diminish your fire.
Contain your water.
Be less… alive.
This internal split can become a pattern—one that quietly shapes how a woman shows up in her relationships, her work, and within herself. It can start to feel like a steady undercurrent of stress or overwhelm, something many women come to recognize as high functioning anxiety.
But a Regulated Woman Is Both
In spiritual traditions across cultures, there has always been an understanding:
Wholeness is not choosing one energy over the other;
It is learning how to hold both.
The divine masculine lives within you as:
- Grounded presence
- Direction and devotion
- The ability to choose, to lead, to protect what matters
The sacred feminine lives within you as:
- Intuition and emotional truth
- Creativity, softness, and deep relational intelligence
- The capacity to feel, to open, to flow
You were never meant to pick one.
You were meant to embody the dance between them.
This is also where emotional regulation begins—not by suppressing parts of yourself, but by allowing both structure and feeling to coexist in a more integrated way.
Fire and Water
The divine masculine is your fire.
It is the part of you that says:
This is what I want.
This is what I will no longer tolerate.
It builds structure.
It creates safety through clarity.
The sacred feminine is your water.
It is the part of you that says:
This is what I feel.
This is what matters.
It softens.
It connects.
It heals.
And here is the truth most people don’t yet understand:
Fire without water becomes control.
Water without fire becomes chaos.
But together?
They become alchemy.
And when both are supported, the nervous system begins to settle—creating space for grounded clarity without emotional overwhelm.
Why This Feels So Threatening to Others
A woman who holds both her fire and her water
cannot be easily categorized.
She cannot be dominated.
She cannot be dismissed.
She cannot be simplified.
She can:
- Set a boundary and stay open
- Speak truth and stay connected
- Feel deeply without collapsing
And that level of embodiment requires something rare:
It requires another person who has met themselves, too.
Because when someone has disowned their own fire,
yours feels aggressive.
When someone has disowned their own emotional depth,
yours feels overwhelming.
So instead of integrating…
They label.
You Are Not Too Much. You Are Undivided.
What you are experiencing is not “too muchness.”
It is what happens when a woman stops fragmenting herself
to be easier to hold.
You are no longer:
- just the soft one
- just the strong one
- just the emotional one
- just the logical one
You are all of it.
And in a world that still relates through roles…
Wholeness can look like excess.
Especially for women who have spent years adapting to manage anxiety, emotional load, or relational expectations.
The Sacred Shift
The work is no longer to become “more feminine”
or “less masculine.”
The work is to:
Refine your fire so it is clean, not reactive.
Deepen your water so it is grounded, not overwhelming.
To lead your life with both.
This is nervous system integration.
This is emotional maturity.
This is spiritual embodiment.
And for many, this work overlaps with what we understand as developing emotional regulation and reducing patterns shaped by chronic stress or high functioning anxiety.
The Relationships That Can Hold You
The right partner will not ask you to choose between your fire and your water.
They will not be threatened by your clarity
or overwhelmed by your depth.
They will meet you with:
Their own grounded fire.
Their own open water.
Because the future of love is not polarity built on imbalance.
It is union built on wholeness.
Final Truth
You are not too masculine.
You are not too emotional.
You are a woman who has remembered
what it means to be whole.
Fire and water.
Structure and flow.
Power and presence.
And the question is no longer:
“Am I too much?”
It is:
“Who is capable of standing in the fire with me—and still meeting me in the depth of my water?”
